Brand Development
The Problem
Animal shelters and rescue organizations are chronically under-resourced and over-capacity with photography falling down the priority list. Shelters know that quality images dramatically improve a dog's chances of adoption, but professional photography isn't in the budget and large intake numbers require efficiency.
I created Send Dog Pics to close that gap.
The Solution
Borrowing from the one-for-one model proved to be the quickest way to win over new audience; every paid portrait session booked sends a photographer to a shelter or rescue partner. The creative challenge was building a brand that could hold both audiences simultaneously; the dog owner booking a session and the rescue organization receiving free portraits.
The Brand
The visual identity had to work hard across two very different contexts: the warmth and personality of a community-driven pet brand, and the credibility required to walk into a rescue organization and be taken seriously as a partner.
The solution was a brand with genuine character to hold the heavy and the light of rescue work. I chose to utilize bold retro typography, a palette that's joyful without being juvenile, and an illustration system built with tongue-in-cheek playfulness.
The website was designed and built entirely in-house, structured around the one-for-one model with clear pathways for both audiences: book a session, become a rescue partner, learn how it works.
CampaignThe Lonely Hearts Club
A February foster awareness campaign built around rescue dogs waiting in shelters.
The campaign drove shelter visits, grew my email list, and gave rescue organizations shareable content they couldn't produce themselves.
The campaign is a case study in community-driven marketing: it gave the audience something to participate in, not just consume. Fosters got exclusive merch, shelters got content, dogs got visibility.
The Merch and Mixer
The exclusive t-shirt exists for two reasons: to sustain the giveback model financially, and to turn customers into brand ambassadors. A foster wearing a Lonely Hearts Club shirt in public is a conversation starter about fostering. Fosters got to pick up their shirt for free at a private mixer where they got to meet other fosters just like them. Mixer attendees opted to play interactive games to win prizes and have their information shared with shelters and rescues looking to build their foster roster.
Results
Since launch, Send Dog Pics has photographed 1,238 rescue animals across 63 shelter visits, built a community of 1,200+ social followers and 84 email subscribers, and established active partnerships with rescue organizations and shelters throughout Middle Tennessee.
Send Dog Pics remains a sustainable passion project for me with continued challenges and reward. Building a brand from nothing with no client lists and no budget have directly impacted my corporate client outreach. I’m in the driver seat for community-driven marketing and running campaigns that give audiences a reason to participate.
