The Mutt Dog

Brand Development, Packaging Design & Retail Strategy

The Problem

The pet supply market is saturated with brands that slap a paw print on the packaging and call it a cause. Rescue organizations remain chronically underfunded while pet industry revenue climbs past $150 billion annually. The disconnect is structural — feel-good marketing with no accountability to outcome.

The Premise

Rather than treat rescue as a marketing angle, The Mutt Dog integrates animal rescue funding directly into its purchase model. Every product sold generates a trackable contribution to rescue operations through The Mutt Fund, built in from the start; not a donation round-up, not a percentage of profits at year end. The creative challenge was making that mission feel like a brand, not a disclaimer.

The Brief

After establishing a relationship with the founder of the Mutt Dog, I was entrusted to create the pitch for a billion dollar opportunity; Walmart.

The brand needed to work at two distances: shelf distance and hand distance. At shelf, it needed to stop a Walmart shopper mid-aisle with confidence and clarity. In hand, it needed to reward closer inspection with personality and purpose.

I chose the palette to stand apart from the blues and reds dominating the pet aisle while coordinating well with every natural dog coat. The tone of voice is direct and conviction-led as a brand that knows rescue.

The hero product line, Mutt Essentials, anchors the system as the everyday, accessible entry point designed to drive volume at retail while funding rescue at scale. The retail display was engineered for an end cap footprint, with "Fetch Funds Rescue" running as ticker copy giving even passive shoppers a clear signal of what the brand does before they read a single word on the package.

The Work

The Pitch

The wholesale pitch was built for a Walmart buyer presentation and structured around three pillars: product quality, retail performance potential, and mission differentiation. Supporting elements included influencer and partnership context — a Kenny Chesney collaboration, creator partnerships, and Mutt Fest Bentonville as a launch activation — to demonstrate that the brand arrived with cultural momentum, not just a product.

The Result

The Mutt Dog presented our pitch and landed the account. The brand system, packaging line, and retail materials are  positioned for wholesale entry in 2027.
